AVICENNA Health Care Assistant (MCA/DA) Course

This course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). It meets the minimum training requirements outlined by the GPhC for staff working on the medicines counter and undertaking dispensing activities and has been designed to give students confidence working in the dispensary and advising customers on the sale of over the counter medicines.

The qualification is equivalent to the following units of the RQF (NVQ/QCF) Level 2 Pharmacy Services:

Unit 1 – Assist with the provision of a pharmacy service to meet individual needs
Unit 2- Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
Unit 3 – Contribute to the effectiveness of teams
Unit 4 – Assist in the sale of medicines and products
Unit 5 – Receive prescriptions from individuals
Unit 6 – Assemble prescribed items
Unit 7 – Order pharmaceutical stock
Unit 8 – Receive pharmaceutical stock
Unit 9 – Maintain pharmaceutical stock
Unit 15 – Assist in the issuing of prescribed items
Unit 16 – Undertake an in-process accuracy check of assembled prescribed
items prior to the final accuracy check

Learning outcomes:

  • Support colleagues in running a successful pharmacy service
  • Advise customers on how to manage common conditions encountered in the pharmacy
  • Recommend over the counter products appropriately to customers
  • Support colleagues with receiving and handing out prescriptions
  • Assist colleagues in the dispensary

Purpose: This course is designed to help pharmacy support colleagues to confidently advise customers on common ailments, know when to refer to a pharmacist and be able to support the pharmacist in the dispensary. Colleagues who successfully complete this course will achieve the recognised qualifications of:

  • Medicine Counter Assistant
  • Dispensing Assistant

Audience: Anyone who has started working in a pharmacy and is working on the medicines counter, including sales assistants and Saturday staff.

Duration to complete: Up to 18 months

Activities to be completed: To complete this course you will need to read the Trainee resources, agree the Learning Contract, and then complete each module and its accompanying MCQ assessment. The programme comes in two parts. A Case Studies Test and a Sign Off is required before receiving the qualification and certificate at each of the Medicines Counter Assistant (MCA) and Dispensing Assistant (DA) stages.
