Medicine Counter Assistant Course

This course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as meeting the knowledge and understanding required to assist on the medicines counter and is equivalent to the following units of the RQF (NVQ/QCF) Level 2 Pharmacy Services:

Unit 4 – Assist in the sale of medicines and products

Unit 5 – Receive prescriptions from individuals

Unit 15 – Assist in the issuing of prescribed items

Learning outcomes:

  • Support colleagues in running a successful pharmacy service
  • Advise customers on how to manage common conditions encountered in the pharmacy
  • Recommend over the counter products appropriately to customers
  • Support colleagues with receiving and handing out prescriptions

Purpose: This course is designed to help pharmacy support colleagues to confidently advise customers on common ailments and know when to refer to a pharmacist. Colleagues who successfully complete this course will achieve the recognised qualification of Medicine Counter Assistant.

Audience: Anyone who has started working in a pharmacy and is working on the medicines counter providing advice to customers on the sale of over the counter (OTC) medicines.

Duration to complete: Up to 12 months

Activities to be completed: To complete this programme you will need to read the Trainee resources, agree the Learning Contract, and then complete each of the 12 MCA Modules and its accompanying Assessments. An MCA Sign Off needs to be completed which includes a Case Studies Test is required before becoming qualified as an MCA and receiving a certificate.
