Why High-Risk Medicine Safety Training?
The bulk of pharmacy services involve the supply of prescriptions and Over The Counter (OTC) medicines. Errors in the supply of these medicines can have a huge impact on patient safety.
According to a 2018 Government report, 237 million medication errors occur in England each year as a result of working practices around prescribing, transition (between care settings), dispensing, administration and monitoring. A quarter of these led to harm and sometimes death.
Pharmacy has a key role to play in helping reduce medication errors, in particular around high-risk medicines. Managing high-risk medicines is part of a greater patient safety agenda and forms part of Clinical Governance and contract monitoring.
High-Risk Medicines Safety Training for Pharmacy
This course aims to help the Pharmacy Team recognise high-risk medicines and understand ways to minimise risks to patients.

- Identify high-risk medicines
- Understand why these medicines are considered ‘high risk’
- Understand the patient groups that may be at risk
- Identify services that can be provided to help people taking high-risk medicines
- Minimise the dangers of high-risk medicines

This course is aimed at all members of the pharmacy team.

This course will take you approximately 1 hour to complete. Videos and external resources are additional and optional but have been included to accommodate different learning styles and to help enhance the learning.
