Pharmacies offering childhood vaccinations now need to complete the safeguarding level 3 training online course.
Safeguarding Children and Young People Level 3 covers a wide range of topics including management of sudden or unexpected death in childhood, parental risk factors, unexplained injuries, neglect in a disabled child, fabricated and induced illness and adolescents presenting with suspected sexual assault.
These nine modules have been created for all clinical staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the needs of a child or young person and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding/child protection concerns.
NOTE – In addition to the HEE e-learning, you need to complete a multi-disciplinary reflective learning activity and log evidence of completion. The reflective learning needs to be repeated and logged every 3 years.

What is involved in safeguarding level 3 training & who needs it?
A person with a central role in a safeguarding situation generally needs to complete safeguarding level 3 training. When staff or others have safeguarding concerns, this person is typically the first point of contact.
This individual may be the Lead or Designated Safeguarding Officer, depending on the setting. Having knowledge of safeguarding policies and contributing to or managing safeguarding plans for vulnerable children or adults could be necessary for them.
It may also be necessary for a Safeguarding Lead to work with other agencies. This is because they are directly responsible for investigating, recording, and reporting any safeguarding concerns in a particular environment. As a representative for vulnerable individuals or children, they need to follow and enforce safeguarding policies.
In addition to building on Level One and Two, Level Three will also provide information specific to the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Safeguarding level 3 training online includes the following aspects:
- Comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding, child abuse, child protection, and protecting vulnerable adults.
- Definitions, guidance, legislation, and particular processes associated with safeguarding.
- Ensuring that you fully meet the duty of care.
- Protection and vulnerability.
- The responsibilities of you and others professionally.
- Reporting and documenting any concerns.
- Contributing to inter-agency assessments.
- Gathering and sharing information appropriately.
- Multi-agency relationships and work.
- Supporting vulnerable people and their families.
- Referral processes.
- Finding information regarding your safeguarding team or local social services.
- Information-sharing responsibilities.
- Be able to recognise and respond to child abuse appropriately and with efficiency, keeping the child at the centre of attention and handling disclosures from children with respect.
- Knowing when to share information and how to respond when you disagree with a choice or decision. Ensure that there is a record of information and that you remain active during the referral process.
Clinical staff who are involved in assessments, interventions, planning, and evaluations should normally complete Level Three training. This training is usually fit for those with designated safeguarding positions or whose main responsibilities involve safeguarding. This could include:
- A designated Safeguarding Officer or Lead.
- Mental health staff.
- Social workers or caregivers.
- Doctors, senior nurses or general practitioners.
- Adult learning practitioners.
- Those in a supervisory or management position.
- Any agency staff in the medical field.
What should you do if you are still uncertain about the safeguarding level 3 training online course?

Different guidelines exist regarding the frequency of safeguarding training. A number of factors influence these guidelines, including the county in which you live and work. Additionally, you should consider the type of job you have, and the company you work for.
We usually recommend a safeguarding training update every two years, or when your certification expires – whichever comes first. By doing so, you will be aware of safeguarding policies and procedures and ensure your knowledge of safeguarding is current.
